On 12 May 2026, Lars Kamolz, Head of the Department of Surgery and Head of the Division of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Medical University of Graz, visited Heiligenkreuz am Waasen Secondary School. As part of his Science Ambassador workshop, he gave the pupils a comprehensive insight into the field of regenerative medicine and demonstrated how rapidly knowledge, research and technology are advancing.

Lars Kamolz began by explaining what is meant by regenerative medicine: a medical speciality that aims to repair, replace or even completely regenerate damaged tissue. This includes, among other things, cell therapies, tissue engineering and modern wound healing technologies. The pupils learnt about the methods used in the past, the innovative technologies that are already standard practice today, and the developments that might be possible in the future.

A particular focus was on practical examples from modern wound treatment. The pupils were able to examine up close a silver-impregnated wound dressing or a wound dressing made from the skin of Icelandic cod, which are used in the treatment of burn injuries. These materials illustrated how innovative technologies support healing and improve medical care.

A key aim was to convey the importance of science and research. The science ambassador highlighted how rapidly medical knowledge is advancing and how important it is to remain curious, ask questions and think critically.

The Medical University of Graz’s focus on healthy aging was also briefly outlined, with an explanation that everyone can do a great deal to contribute to healthy aging themselves — through a balanced diet, regular exercise and a mindful lifestyle.

The workshop was not only informative but also inspiring for the young people. The mix of scientific background knowledge, practical examples and a glimpse into the future of medicine generated great enthusiasm. Many pupils were impressed by just how diverse and exciting medical research can be.

The musculoskeletal system plays a particularly important role when it comes to ‘healthy aging’. Strong bones can withstand greater stress, well-maintained joints ensure smooth, pain-free movement, and fit muscles provide additional support and strength. Those who take good care of their musculoskeletal system from a young age can reap the benefits well into old age. Active research is also being carried out in this field at the Medical University of Graz. A dedicated university centre of excellence in ‘Musculoskeletal Health’ was even recently established, where scientists are investigating bone and muscle loss during aging. Barbara Obermayer-Pietsch discusses what constitutes a healthy musculoskeletal system, how to look after it, and what research is being carried out in this field at the Medical University of Graz.

Strong bones, flexible joints and strong muscles

Bones are by no means dead or inactive tissue: quite the opposite. The structure of bones is constantly adapting and actively responds to stress. Anyone who regularly puts their bones under strain through exercise sends signals to the body that the bones need to be strengthened. This task is carried out, amongst other things, by a pair of cells known as osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts are responsible for building new bone tissue. They form the basis of bone substance and ensure that injuries such as fractures heal. Their counterparts are the osteoclasts: their role is to break down bone tissue and recycle minerals and other nutrients. Together with other cells, osteoblasts and osteoclasts are constantly working to remodel the bone structure so that the tissue can withstand current stresses as effectively as possible. So, anyone who regularly challenges their bones through exercise ensures a stronger skeleton.

Joints are structured differently depending on their ‘function’. A ball-and-socket joint, such as the shoulder or hip, differs in structure from a hinge joint, such as the elbow; however, their function remains similar: Joints enable us to move pain-free and flexibly through the interaction of bones, muscles, ligaments, specialised tissues such as cartilage, and substances such as synovial fluid. Without them, movement as we know it would be unthinkable.

For many people, muscles are mainly a matter of aesthetics, yet they are essential for a well-functioning musculoskeletal system. Strong muscles are not only there to enable us to lift heavy weights, but also serve as an important support structure for the entire musculoskeletal system, particularly in the back. In addition to this primary function, however, muscles have other beneficial properties. For instance, even at rest, muscles burn a comparatively large number of calories, thereby helping to maintain a healthy metabolism. Furthermore, they support the cardiovascular system, reduce the risk of injury and, via neurotransmitters released during physical activity, can also have a positive effect on other organs such as the liver, brain or gut.

Muscle research at the highest level

Research into muscle health is also being carried out at the Medical University of Graz. A key topic in this field is so-called sarcopenia – the loss of muscle mass, which is particularly common in older people. This loss of muscle mass increases the risk of falls, leads more frequently to osteoporosis and is an ever-growing problem for healthcare systems in an aging population worldwide. Research into biomarkers for sarcopenia is being carried out at the Medical University of Graz. The team involved analysed data from a long-term study, the BioPersMed cohort (biomarkers for personalised medicine, involving more than 1,000 participants over 15 years to date), in order to identify reliable biomarkers for muscle loss. Among other things, they identified dp-ucMGP, a so-called adipokine – a substance that is actually produced and released by adipose tissue. This subtype of matrix GLA protein (MGP) is involved in bone metabolism and had previously been associated with reduced muscle strength.

How to keep your musculoskeletal system healthy as you age

  • A healthy diet rich in calcium and protein, and prevention of vitamin D deficiency
  • Exercise and strength training to maintain muscle and skeletal mass
  • A healthy lifestyle without smoking or excessive alcohol consumption
  • Preventative care and medical advice where necessary

Bewegung wirkt gleich doppelt.

Das Prinzip dahinter lässt sich einfach zusammenfassen: „Use it or lose it .“

Was den Gelenken guttut

How can healthy nutrition in care homes not only meet the needs of older people, but also be organised in a sustainable way? This is the question being addressed by the SUNRISE research project – SUstainable healthy NutRition In nurSing homEs – run by the Institute of Nursing and Health Sciences at the Medical University of Graz. Led by Doris Eglseer, a practical guide to sustainable and healthy nutrition in care homes is being developed in collaboration with residents and staff at a care home.

Research in collaboration with residents and care staff

A key feature of the project is the citizen science approach: residents and staff at a Caritas care home in the Diocese of Graz-Seckau are actively involved in data collection, analysis and interpretation of the results. “Care homes face the challenge of combining the individual nutritional needs of older people with environmental sustainability. Our aim is to develop solutions that can actually be implemented in day-to-day care,” explains project leader Doris Eglseer. “The people on the ground know everyday life in a care home best. Their experiences and perspectives are crucial for developing measures that really work,” says the researcher.

Ten key factors for sustainable nutrition

The project used various methods – including photo documentation (“Photovoice”), interviews and surveys – to identify key factors influencing sustainable nutrition in care homes. These include, among other things, the quality and variety of food, appropriate preparation, a pleasant dining environment, social aspects of communal eating, and structural conditions such as resources or organisation.

The results show that sustainable and healthy nutrition is most successful when three key aspects work together: a positive dining environment, the active involvement of residents and staff, and locally rooted measures such as seasonal and regional food or the reduction of food waste. “Sustainable nutrition is certainly achievable in care homes. The key is that everyone involved is included and works together to develop solutions,” emphasises Doris Eglseer.

Practical outcomes: a cookbook and photo exhibition

In addition to the guide, the project also produced creative outcomes: a cookbook featuring favourite recipes was created together with residents and staff. Each recipe includes a tip on how it can be prepared in an even healthier and more sustainable way. Furthermore, photographs documenting everyday life in the care home, which are presented as part of an exhibition, explore the theme of nutrition.

“The participatory approach not only strengthens the willingness to implement changes but also fosters mutual understanding between residents and staff. This gives rise to innovative ideas that are developed directly from everyday life,” says Doris Eglseer.

Closing event in May 2026

The results of the project, funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF), will be presented at a closing event at the Caritas St. Peter Care Home. Among other things, the event will feature the presentation of the developed guide – in versions for professionals and decision-makers as well as for the general public – along with the cookbook and the accompanying photo exhibition.

René Girard, a PhD candidate in the Molecular and Translational Biology Program at the MD Anderson UT Health Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, has joined the Lung Research group at the Otto Loewi Research Center, Medical University of Graz, through a prestigious Marshal Plan stipend.

Girard’s project targets a critical unmet need in systemic sclerosis (SSc), a heterogeneous autoimmune disease that disproportionately affects women and can progress to pulmonary hypertension (PH), a life-threatening condition defined by mean pulmonary arterial pressure ≥ 20 mmHg at rest. In SSc, PH may occur alone (SSc-PAH) or with interstitial lung disease, and is marked by vascular remodeling and right-ventricular dysfunction. Despite therapeutic advances, many patients ultimately require lung transplantation, which still carries poor five-year survival—underscoring the urgency for new treatments.

These studies aim to clarify disease mechanisms and lay the groundwork for targeted therapeutics. Beyond the lab, René Girard is excited to work alongside the excellent team at Med Uni Graz, gain insights from a diverse research group, and acquire specialized techniques not available to him in Houston. Outside the lab, he is looking forward to experiencing Austrian culture and enjoying the local weather!

From 11 May 2026, the canteen at the Medical University of Graz will be expanding its menu to include so-called ‘longevity power food’ meals. Once or twice a week, the menu will feature dishes specifically designed to support the metabolism and immune system, as well as to counteract cellular ageing processes and inflammation – scientifically sound and suitable for everyday consumption.

Nutrition as the key to healthy aging

What we eat every day has a significant impact on our health, performance and well-being, not just today but in the long term. Current scientific findings show that nutrition is one of the key factors for healthy aging. The new Longevity Powerfood menus were developed based on the latest research findings in close collaboration with general practitioner and nutritionist Kristina Hütter-Klepp and cell biologist Corina Madreiter-Sokolowski. “Nutrition has a direct impact on key processes in the body, from inflammatory mechanisms to cellular metabolism. Our aim is to translate scientific findings in such a way that they can be easily implemented in everyday life,” explains Kristina Hütter-Klepp. “What is particularly exciting is that certain nutrients and their combinations can influence signalling pathways linked to ageing and metabolism,” adds Corina Madreiter-Sokolowski.

What is behind Longevity-Powerfood?

Longevity Powerfood focuses on a balanced diet rather than individual ‘superfoods’. The focus is on foods that can reduce chronic inflammatory processes, support metabolism and the immune system, maintain muscle and organ function, and stabilise energy levels and performance. Key components include fibre-rich carbohydrates, high-quality plant-based proteins, unsaturated fatty acids, and pre- and probiotic foods. Particular emphasis is also placed on regional, seasonal and, where possible, unprocessed ingredients.

From research to everyday life

The programme is implemented directly in the canteen on the campus of the Medical University of Graz. The dishes are based on scientific recommendations, whilst remaining deliberately suitable for everyday consumption and tasty. Examples range from vegetable dishes with pulses, through wholemeal versions of classic side dishes, to fish dishes with high-quality fats or nutrient-rich breakfast options such as porridge with berries and nuts. Gentle cooking methods such as steaming or braising, as well as a high proportion of fresh and plant-based ingredients, are at the heart of this approach.

Sustainability and health considered together

In addition to health considerations, the environment also plays a key role: short transport routes, seasonal produce and resource-efficient processing are central components of the concept. After all, healthy aging is closely linked to a healthy environment. Mensa GmbH on the campus of the Medical University of Graz has for years been committed to providing fresh, balanced and varied catering with a regional and seasonal focus. With the new Longevity Powerfood range, this concept is now being specifically expanded to incorporate the latest scientific findings.

“We are delighted to offer our guests Longevity Powerfood, a range that sensibly combines enjoyment and health whilst bringing the latest research to life,” says Christian Jokesch, site manager of the canteen.

Was steckt hinter Longevity-Powerfood?

The PostDoc Association (PDA) at the Medical University of Graz has successfully held its kick-off meeting. With over 100 participants and thought-provoking presentations, the event and initiative represent a significant step forward in supporting early-career researchers at the Medical University of Graz. The event focused on highlighting the importance of reliable working conditions for young researchers and actively helping to shape them. It is also important to consolidate sustainable career prospects for researchers after they have completed their PhDs. In his opening remarks, Vice-Rector Akos Heinemann emphasised the strategic relevance of this qualification phase for the institution’s scientific excellence and reaffirmed that the consistent support of postdoctoral researchers is a key priority in the university’s future planning. During the event, the PDA presented its objectives and the first working groups. A key focus here is also on creating a network.

The various contributions to the programme shed light on the complex demands of the postdoc phase from different perspectives: Yasmin Dolak-Struss highlighted strategies for the skills development of young researchers, whilst Med Uni Graz researcher Senka Holzer provided an insight into her career as a researcher, emphasising in particular the importance of personal consistency and professional networking. Johanna Stadlbauer presented the University of Graz Career Centre and highlighted the importance of established university structures.

The PDA intends to expand its services, particularly in the areas of mentoring and career development for young researchers, and to intensify exchange among postdoctoral researchers through regular activities. All postdoctoral researchers at the Medical University of Graz can actively contribute to the development of the PDA, for example by participating in the regular meetings of the General Assembly or by getting involved in a working group.

The Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW) has appointed Giulio Superti-Furga as the inaugural scientific director of the CORI Institute for Metabolism Research in Graz. The institute was established through a unique partnership between the ÖAW, the University of Graz, the Medical University of Graz and Graz University of Technology. CORI aims to become Europe’s leading interdisciplinary centre for metabolism research: metabolic processes in cells are investigated systematically, experimentally and through molecular biology, and modelled using mathematical methods – with the aim of specifically intervening in these processes, modifying them and developing new therapeutic and technological solutions.

An outstanding researcher and experienced leader

Giulio Superti-Furga is one of Europe’s most renowned biomedical scientists with many years of leadership experience in research institutions. As founding director of the Austrian Academy of Sciences’ Centre for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) in Vienna, which he led for two decades, he established an internationally recognised institute at the interface of biology, medicine and data science. The four-time ERC grant holder is Professor of Medical Systems Biology at the Medical University of Vienna, a member of five scientific academies and co-founder of five biotechnology companies. Most recently, Superti-Furga was involved in establishing the Ri.MED Foundation’s research centre in Palermo, drawing on his expertise.

Focus on human health

The CORI Institute is named after Gerty and Carl Cori, who are regarded as icons of metabolic research and were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1947. CORI will address major challenges in human health and aims to become the leading centre for metabolism-oriented science, enabling predictive models for health and disease as well as new strategies to strengthen human resilience. By combining experimental approaches with artificial intelligence and mathematical methods, the institute aims to develop comprehensive models of human metabolism and translate these into new therapies, as well as to design, modulate and engineer metabolic systems in a targeted manner. Researchers from biology, medicine, mathematics, computer science and engineering will work together in teams at the institute.

ÖAW partnership with Graz universities

CORI will cooperate closely with the University of Graz, the Medical University of Graz and Graz University of Technology. Where possible, group leaders will be offered a secondary affiliation at one of the partner universities to help shape and actively drive their scientific integration from the outset. Recruitment of the first group leaders and the administrative management team begins immediately, with the first scientific activities scheduled to start as early as September 2026. The institute will initially operate from temporary premises and subsequently move into the two purpose-built research buildings on Leechgasse in Graz. At full capacity, CORI will employ up to 150 internationally recruited scientists.

Giulio Superti-Furga, Founding Director of the CORI Institute: “It is an honour and a privilege to establish the CORI Institute in Graz and to harness Graz’s excellence in metabolic research to create a new international beacon. Metabolism is not just one research field among many: it is the organising logic of life. Our aim is to create a new kind of institute that combines mathematics, artificial intelligence and experimental biology to make metabolism understandable and predictable, and furthermore to actively shape, control and harness it for technological applications. “At CORI, I see an opportunity to contribute my experience in establishing and shaping research institutions to create an institute that brings together the most attractive and forward-looking elements of modern biomedical science.”

Gelungene Premiere

How can the teaching and training of medical students be improved? This is a question that the Medical University of Graz is constantly addressing. Motivated teams within the Department of Education and Teaching are working on ways to enhance and modernise the training of young doctors. One of these teams recently demonstrated their success with a publication in the journal *BMC Medical Education*, one of the most prestigious journals in this field. Staff at the Department of Neurology, led by Julian Elbischger and Markus Kneihsl, have completed an innovative and successful teaching project with a course on neurovascular ultrasound, highlighting the possibilities in this field.

An important tool for stroke prevention and diagnosis

Just under a third of all strokes are caused by occlusion of the major vessels supplying the brain (such as the carotid artery). Neurovascular ultrasound is an important tool for rapidly detecting vascular wall deposits (known as plaques) as a cause of stroke or for identifying them at an early stage during screening examinations. The examination is non-invasive, can quickly provide insights into potential problems with blood flow to the brain, and represents an important tool for doctors across various medical disciplines (including neurology, internal medicine, radiology and vascular surgery).

Practical training as a strategy for success

The study involved 51 students at various stages of their studies who completed a practice-oriented and standardised course. The focus was on working in small groups and hands-on training, so that the content could be conveyed to the students as directly as possible.

Before the course began, all participants took a theory test followed by a theoretical introduction to the topic of neurovascular ultrasound. This was followed by a total of five training sessions and a practical examination, which tested their ability to independently perform an exploratory neurosonographic examination. “Structured and resource-efficient teaching concepts enable high-quality, practice-oriented ultrasound training. Hands-on training in small groups quickly leads to measurable practical skills,” said lead author Julian Elbischger.

A successful debut

Participation in the course proved worthwhile for the students. 86% of students achieved an exam score of over 70%. It was particularly noteworthy that the results were independent of the students’ prior ultrasound experience, which speaks to the quality of the course structure. “The results support the Medical University of Graz’s approach of strengthening practice-oriented teaching to improve patient care in the long term,” summarises Markus Kneihsl. In the long run, the training can help improve the quality of stroke prevention and diagnosis.

", "body": "

At the Kleine Zeitung Business Stage, experts explain how we can actually influence the aging process. First, the sobering news: there is no such thing as a miracle cure that will let us live to the age of 120 in good health without much effort on our part! So, to ensure we can continue to age healthily, will we still have to rely primarily on factors such as a healthy diet, exercise, regular medical check-ups, etc.? And what can scientists, pharmacies and companies do to help ensure that we remain healthy and active for as long as possible?

Five experts discussed these and many other questions in the Skyroom of the Styria Media Centre at the Kleine Zeitung Business Stage, whilst also sharing their insights and perspectives on the topic of ‘Healthy Ageing – growing older in good health’: Christian Kladiva, Executive Director of Merkur Insurance; Lukas Schinko, CEO of the hearing aid company Neuroth; scientist Corina Madreiter-Sokolowski from the Medical University of Graz; general practitioner Kristina Hütter-Klepp; and Alexandra Fuchsbichler, pharmacist and President of the Styrian Chamber of Pharmacists.

What does Aging mean?

The human body is made up of more than 400 cell types, which age at different rates. But what they all have in common is that the genetic information they carry becomes increasingly damaged as we grow older. The mitochondria – the powerhouses of the cells – also cease to function as effectively. Together, this impairs the cells’ functionality – in other words, we age.

The trend towards ‘longevity’ – that is, the pursuit of a healthy life into old age – and the associated lifestyle advice, supplements and active ingredients are currently on everyone’s lips. How much of this is scientifically based?

Corina Madreiter-Sokolowski: Much of what is promised is not based on representative clinical trials. Testing an active ingredient on perhaps ten people is simply not enough. The factors influencing our ageing process are far too complex for that.

Alexandra Fuchsbichler: And as for the ‘miracle cures’ that are circulating through various channels, I have to disappoint everyone, even as a pharmacist: I haven’t come across the pill for staying forever young, and it doesn’t exist.

So which measures for healthier ageing are actually scientifically proven?

Madreiter-Sokolowski: Plant-based, calorie-reduced diets are easy to implement and effective. Personal health literacy is also a very significant factor.

Fuchsbichler: I can only agree with that. We need to start with our children, teaching them health literacy. This has been proven to add years to life. Ensuring that people can enjoy these years in good health is one of the core tasks of the pharmacy as an accessible and health-promoting institution.

Kristina Hütter-Klepp: It is well-known things like healthy eating, exercise, sufficient sleep, etc., that allow us to age more healthily. Very important: it is never too late to change your lifestyle!

Mr Kladiva, Merkur Insurance, whose slogan is ‘Insuring the miracle of life’, surely has a pretty good overview of its clients’ state of health?

Christian Kladiva: As Austria’s oldest insurance company and a pioneer in the field of prevention, we know that health changes can become more frequent during certain stages of life. Together with partners in the healthcare sector, such insights can help to further develop preventive care and treatment in a targeted manner – with the clear aim of supporting people in staying fit for as long as possible.

And what measures can a large company like Neuroth take to support the health of its employees, Mr Schinko?

Lukas Schinko: For me, the most important measure is a healthy corporate culture. If employees feel at ease, that alone reduces stress levels enormously. Added to this are initiatives such as targeted education and regular health checks. For instance, a hearing aid can significantly reduce the risk of age-related conditions such as dementia in cases of hearing loss.

Hütter-Klepp: Yes, companies are a good place to communicate preventive health measures to a large number of people.

What is the maximum age humans are actually built to live to?

Madreiter-Sokolowski: Mathematical models suggest an age of up to 125 years.

Suppose you became Health Minister. Which preventive measure would be your top priority?

Kladiva: Promoting healthy eating and exercise in nurseries.

Madreiter-Sokolowski: A focus on improving health literacy in schools.

Hütter-Klepp: A communication campaign to raise health awareness.

Fuchsbichler: A prevention/health account with personalised health services such as screening tests or vaccinations.

Schinko: Anything that promotes a greater zest for life and healthy self-esteem.
