Als Folge davon treten multiple Mangelerscheinungen inklusive Begleiterkrankungen auf. Verschiedenste Prozeduren zur chirurgischen Darmverlängerung sind nur bedingt erfolgreich. So sind Darmtransplantationen nach wie vor komplikationsreich, sowie mit einer hohen Mortalitätsrate vergesellschaftet und daher nur in Einzelfällen indiziert. Ein vielversprechender Ansatz zur Behandlung des Kurzdarmsyndromes ist die mechanische Dehnung von Darmgewebe zur Wachstumsstimulation. Die Dehnung von Anteilen des Dünndarmes wurde im Kleintiermodell bereits erfolgreich ausgetestet und konnte durch unsere Laborgruppe MESI (Universitätsklinik für Kinder- und Jugendchirurgie) mittels Adaptierung und Weiterentwicklung der publizierten Techniken reproduziert werden.
