Medizinischen Universität Graz hat erfolgreich ihr Kick-off Meeting veranstaltet. Mit über 100 Teilnehmer*innen sowie richtungsweisenden Vorträgen stellt die Veranstaltung und Initiative einen bedeutsamen Fortschritt in der Förderung des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses an der Med Uni Graz dar. Im Fokus der Veranstaltung stand das Ziel, die Bedeutung von verlässlichen Rahmenbedingungen für junge Forscher*innen aufzuzeigen und aktiv mitzugestalten. Dabei ist es wichtig, auch nachhaltige Karriereperspektiven für Wissenschafter*innen nach der Promotion zu festigen. In seinen Eröffnungsworten hob Vizerektor Akos Heinemann die strategische Relevanz dieser Qualifizierungsphase für die wissenschaftliche Exzellenz des Standorts hervor und bekräftigte, dass die konsequente Förderung der Postdoktorand*innen ein wichtiges Anliegen der universitären Zukunftsplanung bilde. Im Rahmen der Veranstaltung präsentierte die PDA ihre Zielsetzungen sowie die ersten Arbeitsgruppen. Ein Hauptaugenmerk liegt hierbei auch auf der Schaffung eines Netzwerkes. </p><p><p>Die verschiedenen Beiträge des Programms beleuchteten die komplexen Anforderungen der Postdoc-Phase aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven: Yasmin Dolak-Struss unterstrich Strategien zur Kompetenzentwicklung von jungen Wissenschaftler*innen, während Med Uni Graz Forscherin Senka Holzer einen Einblick in ihren Werdegang als Wissenschafterin gab und dabei insbesondere die Bedeutung von persönlicher Beständigkeit und beruflicher Vernetzung betonte. Johanna Stadlbauer stellte das Career Center der Universität Graz vor und hob den Stellenwert etablierter Strukturen der Universitäten hervor.</p></p><p><p>Die PDA beabsichtigt, Angebote speziell im Bereich Mentoring und Karriereentwicklung für Jungwissenschafter*innen auszuweiten und durch regelmäßige Aktivitäten den Austausch unter den Postdoktorand*innen zu intensivieren. With over 100 participants and thought-provoking presentations, the event and initiative represent a significant step forward in supporting early-career researchers at the Medical University of Graz. The event focused on highlighting the importance of reliable working conditions for young researchers and actively helping to shape them. It is also important to consolidate sustainable career prospects for researchers after they have completed their PhDs. In his opening remarks, Vice-Rector Akos Heinemann emphasised the strategic relevance of this qualification phase for the institution’s scientific excellence and reaffirmed that the consistent support of postdoctoral researchers is a key priority in the university’s future planning. During the event, the PDA presented its objectives and the first working groups. A key focus here is also on creating a network. </p><p><p>The various contributions to the programme shed light on the complex demands of the postdoc phase from different perspectives: Yasmin Dolak-Struss highlighted strategies for the skills development of young researchers, whilst Med Uni Graz researcher Senka Holzer provided an insight into her career as a researcher, emphasising in particular the importance of personal consistency and professional networking. This year, the award went to Mahmoud Abdellatif from the Division of Cardiology at the Medical University of Graz. </p><p><p>His research focuses on the biology of Aging and its influence on cardiometabolic diseases. Together with his team, he is investigating molecular mechanisms of Aging in the cardiovascular system in order to develop targeted therapies. Their work has defined key hallmarks of cardiovascular aging and identified therapeutically relevant signalling pathways. Dieses Jahr wurde Mahmoud Abdellatif von der Klinischen Abteilung für Kardiologie an der Med Uni Graz ausgezeichnet. </p><p><p>Sein Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt auf der Biologie des Alterns und ihrem Einfluss auf kardiometabolische Erkrankungen. Das Institut entstand in einer einzigartigen Partnerschaft der ÖAW mit der Universität Graz, der Medizinischen Universität Graz und der Technischen Universität Graz. CORI strebt an, Europas führendes interdisziplinäres Zentrum für Metabolismusforschung zu werden: Stoffwechselprozesse in Zellen werden systematisch, experimentell und molekularbiologisch untersucht und mithilfe mathematischer Methoden modelliert – mit dem Ziel, gezielt in diese Prozesse einzugreifen, sie zu verändern und neue therapeutische und technologische Lösungen zu entwickeln.</p><p><h4>Exzellenter Forscher, erfahrener Gestalter</h4></p><p><p>Giulio Superti-Furga ist einer der renommiertesten biomedizinischen Wissenschafter Europas mit langjähriger Führungserfahrung in Forschungsinstitutionen. Als Gründungsdirektor des Forschungszentrums für Molekulare Medizin der ÖAW (CeMM) in Wien, das er zwei Jahrzehnte lang als Direktor leitete, baute er ein international anerkanntes Institut an der Schnittstelle von Biologie, Medizin und Datenwissenschaft auf. Der vierfache ERC-Preisträger ist Professor für Medizinische Systembiologie an der Medizinischen Universität Wien, Mitglied in fünf wissenschaftlichen Akademien sowie Mitbegründer von fünf Biotechnologieunternehmen. Zuletzt war Superti-Furga aufgrund seiner Expertise am Aufbau des Forschungszentrums der Ri.MED Foundation in Palermo beteiligt.</p></p><p><h4>Menschliche Gesundheit im Fokus</h4></p><p><p>Das CORI-Institut ist nach Gerty und Carl Cori benannt, die als Ikonen der Stoffwechselforschung gelten und 1947 mit dem Nobelpreis für Medizin ausgezeichnet wurden. CORI wird sich mit großen Herausforderungen der menschlichen Gesundheit befassen und soll das führende Zentrum für stoffwechselorientierte Wissenschaft werden, das Vorhersagemodelle für Gesundheit und Krankheit sowie neue Strategien zur Stärkung der Widerstandsfähigkeit von Menschen ermöglicht. Durch die Kombination experimenteller Ansätze mit künstlicher Intelligenz und mathematischen Verfahren zielt das Institut darauf ab, umfassende Modelle des menschlichen Stoffwechsels zu entwickeln und diese in neue Therapien zu übersetzen sowie metabolische Systeme gezielt zu entwerfen, zu modulieren und technisch nutzbar zu machen. Am Institut werden Forschende aus Biologie, Medizin, Mathematik, Informatik und Ingenieurwesen in Teams zusammenarbeiten.</p></p><p><h4>ÖAW-Partnerschaft mit Grazer Unis</h4></p><p><p>CORI wird eng mit der Universität Graz, der Medizinischen Universität Graz und der Technischen Universität Graz kooperieren. Für die Gruppenleiterinnen und Gruppenleiter ist, soweit möglich, eine Zweitaffiliation an einer der Partneruniversitäten vorgesehen, um ihre wissenschaftliche Integration von Beginn an mitzuprägen und aktiv zu gestalten. Die Rekrutierung der ersten Gruppenleitungen und der administrativen Leitung startet ab sofort, die ersten wissenschaftlichen Aktivitäten sollen bereits im September 2026 beginnen. Das Institut wird zunächst in provisorischen Räumlichkeiten arbeiten und anschließend in die beiden eigens eingerichteten Forschungsgebäude in der Grazer Leechgasse einziehen. Bei voller Auslastung wird das CORI bis zu 150 international rekrutierte Wissenschafter*innen beschäftigen.</p></p><p><p><strong>Giulio Superti-Furga, Gründungsdirektor des CORI-Instituts: </strong>„Es ist mir eine Ehre und ein Privileg, das CORI-Institut in Graz aufzubauen und die Grazer Exzellenz in der Stoffwechselforschung zu nutzen, um einen neuen internationalen Leuchtturm zu schaffen. The institute was established through a unique partnership between the ÖAW, the University of Graz, the Medical University of Graz and Graz University of Technology. CORI aims to become Europe’s leading interdisciplinary centre for metabolism research: metabolic processes in cells are investigated systematically, experimentally and through molecular biology, and modelled using mathematical methods – with the aim of specifically intervening in these processes, modifying them and developing new therapeutic and technological solutions.</p><p><h4>An outstanding researcher and experienced leader</h4></p><p><p>Giulio Superti-Furga is one of Europe’s most renowned biomedical scientists with many years of leadership experience in research institutions. As founding director of the Austrian Academy of Sciences’ Centre for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) in Vienna, which he led for two decades, he established an internationally recognised institute at the interface of biology, medicine and data science. The four-time ERC grant holder is Professor of Medical Systems Biology at the Medical University of Vienna, a member of five scientific academies and co-founder of five biotechnology companies. Most recently, Superti-Furga was involved in establishing the Ri.MED Foundation’s research centre in Palermo, drawing on his expertise.</p></p><p><h4>Focus on human health</h4></p><p><p>The CORI Institute is named after Gerty and Carl Cori, who are regarded as icons of metabolic research and were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1947. CORI will address major challenges in human health and aims to become the leading centre for metabolism-oriented science, enabling predictive models for health and disease as well as new strategies to strengthen human resilience. By combining experimental approaches with artificial intelligence and mathematical methods, the institute aims to develop comprehensive models of human metabolism and translate these into new therapies, as well as to design, modulate and engineer metabolic systems in a targeted manner. Researchers from biology, medicine, mathematics, computer science and engineering will work together in teams at the institute.</p></p><p><h4>ÖAW partnership with Graz universities</h4></p><p><p>CORI will cooperate closely with the University of Graz, the Medical University of Graz and Graz University of Technology. Where possible, group leaders will be offered a secondary affiliation at one of the partner universities to help shape and actively drive their scientific integration from the outset. Recruitment of the first group leaders and the administrative management team begins immediately, with the first scientific activities scheduled to start as early as September 2026. The institute will initially operate from temporary premises and subsequently move into the two purpose-built research buildings on Leechgasse in Graz.
