Join us for an herb walk with Michael Flechl and learn more about the native plants that grow in the center of Graz! We will look for edible plants and herbs, learn about their history and how to use them for cooking or healing purposes.
We will meet at Stadtparkinfo and then explore Stadtpark for a bit before moving on to Schlossberg. Please note that the walk will take place no matter the weather, so make sure to bring a raincoat or umbrella in case it rains.

Flow cytometry has become an essential tool in biological research as well as clinical diagnostics. The technology of flow cytometry enables high-speed analysis and isolation of cells in suspension by rapid and simultaneous analysis of multiple parameters at a single-cell level.
This one-day course will cover the basic fundamentals of this technique and will give an overview of its wide range of applications in biomedical research.
Particular emphasis will be given on the key aspects of designing a successful flow cytometry experiment, including multicolor panel design, instrument set-up, experimental and technical controls, compensation and spillover spreading. This will also be demonstrated by interactive exercises in the hands-on part session of the course. This course is aimed at those who are new to flow cytometry and intend to use it for their research work as well as for users who already have some experience but missed out learning the theoretical basics of flow cytometry. It is also a great opportunity for those users who want to refresh their knowledge about best practices in flow cytometry.

5S Data: Organization is not a 4-letter word!
5S work organisation (also known as 5A in German) is a methodology that was popularised by Toyota in production systems in the 2000s. It consists of the methods: Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardise and Sustain. In 2019, the University of Helsinki linked the methodology to research data and popularised it as “5S-Data”.
This Coffee Lecture will go into detail about the steps and how you can implement the right organisation of research data in your work team.

R is a statistical program that can be used interactively to explore data or used as a programming language to implement complex data analyses. It is extensible via libraries and covers a high variety of evaluation tools. Unlike a menu-based programme such as SPSS, GraphPad Prism, STATA ... , R requires programming skills. After an introduction to the environment of R, participants are trained step by step to create simple data preparations and analysis in an inspiring workshop based atmosphere by their own. The focus is on teaching programming skills with regard to statistical issues. Various exercises help participants to consolidate the course content they have learned and to immediately apply their newly acquired knowledge to practical examples.
Training content
- R Introduction: Introduction to R Studio, First programming steps in R
- Data preparation in R: Data import (different formats SPSS, Excel, csv,), Data types, data preparation (filter data, transform and recode data, missing data) implementaton of a simple data management workflow in a few steps
- Descriptive statistics in R
- Inferential statistic: Distributions and testing for normal distribution, correlations, t-tests (with possible extensions), linear regression models, on demand survival models
- Graph creation in base R (bar charts, scatterplot, boxplot,...)
- Short introduction to R Markdown
