Ich möchte Sie sehr gerne auf die Aktion #yeswecare aufmerksam machen, die nach dem höchst erfolgreichen Auftakt in Wien nun am Silvesterabend in Graz ihre Fortsetzung finden wird, um gemeinsam an die Corona Opfer zu denken und Solidarität mit den Gesundheitsberufen zu zeigen.

Treffpunkt zum „Lichtermeer“ ist am 31. Dezember um 17.30 Uhr am Ring im Bereich der Oper, wo die Veranstaltung um 18.00 Uhr beginnen wird. Das Veranstaltungsende ist für 18.10 Uhr geplant. Alle Teilnehmer*innen werden gebeten eine FFP2-Maske zu tragen und auf die Einhaltung eines gewissen Abstandes zu achten. Dies wird keine laute Aktion werden, es soll sogar ausdrücklich auf alles verzichtet werden, was laut ist, um in Stille ein Zeichen zu setzen. Je nach Teilnehmer*innen-Anzahl wird die Route dynamisch gewählt, um größtmögliche Sicherheit gewährleisten zu können.

The Brain´s Systems for Space and Time

Edvard Moser, Kavli Institute for Systems Neuroscience, Trondheim, Norway

This lecture will focus on how the mammalian brain encodes space and time. Few brain functions are more critical to survival than the ability to organize space and time. I will begin with the Nobel-awarded discoveries on space. The entorhinal cortex of the mammalian brain contains specialized position-coding cell types, including grid cells. Grid cells are active only when animals (and humans) are at certain locations, locations that tile environments in a periodic hexagonal pattern. Together with other specialized cell types in the entorhinal region, grid cells enable a dynamic GPS-like representation of our own location in the environment. This representation is encoded at the neural population level, not in individual neurons but in hundreds of neurons that work together. Jointly the activity of grid cells always moves around in a low-dimensional space, consistent with the idea that grid-cell activity is shaped by the intrinsic circuitry of the region rather than by any particular sensory inputs. In the second part of the lecture, I will switch to time and show how time can be inferred from the joint activity of cells in a different region of the entorhinal cortex, suggesting that this entire brain system is adapted for encoding both the wheres and the whens of experience, in agreement with the now common view that deficits in the function of the entorhinal system are at the core of neurological diseases where orientation in space and time is affected, such as in Alzheimer´s disease.

Statistical data analysis with SPSS for Life Science Researchers: Survival analysis and Analysing Categorical data

The aim of this first part of the course is to describe the various methods used for modeling and evaluating survival data, also called time-to-event data. General statistical concepts and methods discussed in this course include survival and hazard functions, Kaplan-Meier graphs, log-rank and related tests, Cox proportional hazards model.

The second part of the course will focus on contingency table data, where the cell entries represent counts that are cross-tabulated using categorical variables. Tests for (conditional) independence are discussed in the context of odds-ratios, relative risks and simple Chi²-tests. McNemar test, estimation of cut-offs, ROC/AUC analysis, sensitivity and specifity are further discussed statistical methods and concepts.

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to check test specific assumptions and will be familiar with common statistical methods in survival and categorical data analysis. The participants will have the ability to choose the suitable statistical analysis method for different data sets and will have insight how to interpret statistical results.

MERAG - Core Facility Computational Bioanalytics. Introduction into Galaxy

Galaxy is an open source, web-based platform for data intensive biomedical research. This workshop will teach participants the basics of Galaxy, introducing the Galaxy interface including a working example (Preprocessing and QC, Microbiome, ChIP-Seq or RNA-Seq analysis) .

The course participants will take the first steps with Galaxy. Upon successful completion of this course, they will be familiar with:

• Galaxy interface

• Working with histories

• Data upload, data analysis and visualization

• Share data with others

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to understand NGS data and start using the appropriate tools for its analysis.

Most tasks of bioinformatics are processed using the Linux operating system (OS). Therefore, familiarity with and understanding of basic Linux command lines is essential for bioinformatics analysis. This course will provide you an introduction to the Linux OS and its basic command line tools. Material will cover logging into remote machines, filesystem organization and file manipulation. During the course participants will also learn how to use and submit jobs with SLURM on the cluster.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be familiar with:

• Basic Linux commands (including grep, sort, find, etc.)

• Running tools over SLURM (cluster management and job scheduling system)

Der Klimawandel stellt unsere modernen Gesellschaften vor noch nie dagewesene Herausforderungen. Nur mit dem Ernst der Lage entsprechenden Strategien und Maßnahmen, kann das Ziel des Pariser Übereinkommens, die globale Erderwärmung deutlich unter 2° C zu halten, erreicht werden. Neben dem Einsatz neuer Technologien bedarf es einer grundlegenden Änderung menschlicher Verhaltensmuster und der Neuorientierung bestehender Systeme. Dabei spielen Forschung und Innovation neben Bildung und einem breiten Bewusstseinswandel eine wichtige Rolle. Kooperation und die Bereitschaft aller Teile der Gesellschaft zusammen etwas zu bewegen, sind das Gebot der Stunde.

Steirischer Hochschulraum verbindet Disziplinen
Die neun steirischen Hochschulen – bestehend aus fünf Universitäten, zwei pädagogischen Hochschulen und zwei Fachhochschulen, deren Zusammenarbeit von der Idee eines gemeinsamen Hochschulbewusstseins getragen ist – laden zu einer Ringvorlesung unter Federführung von Sustainability4U ein. This course is an introduction to statistical methods and statistical software in the field of Analysis of Variance and Regression analysis. On the basis of various practical examples, the participants learn to analyse and visualize data and how to interpret results. A main goal is to show participants the importance of quality control, assessing assumptions and ensuring adequate sample size. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be familiar with the statistical methods covered in this two days and will be able to interpret statistical results. The participants will have the ability to choose the suitable statistical analysis method for different data sets.

Forschungsdaten mit Anderen zu teilen wird zunehmend als wichtiger Teil des Forschungsprozesses gesehen, und kann zu Fortschritt in Forschung und medizinischer Versorgung führen. Diese Praxis, die u.a. von Drittmittelgebern und Zeitschriften unterstützt wird, muss jedoch in Einklang mit dem Datenschutz gebracht werden, wenn es um personenbezogene Daten geht. Dieses Seminar wird Sie über Möglichkeiten informieren, Daten so zu bearbeiten und zu teilen, dass sie nachgenutzt werden können und zugleich der Datenschutz gewahrt bleibt. Zusätzlich zu bereits bestehenden Lösungen für einige Anforderungen, wird für andere der rechtliche und technische Status Quo dieses sehr dynamischen Feldes vorgestellt.

Lernziele:

- Gründe für das Teilen von Daten und Beispiele für die Nachnutzung von Daten kennen

- Wissen, wie Datenschutz sichergestellt wird, wenn Patient*innendaten mit Kooperationspartnern geteilt werden

- Mit den Konzepten von FAIR Data und Interoperabilität vertraut sein

- Grundlagen zu Risiken der Re-Identifizierung und zu Anonymisierung, sowie Werkzeuge für die Anonymisierung kennen

- Services und Aufgaben einer Datentreuhandstelle kennen

- Repositorien und Register für das Teilen von Daten aus klinischen Studien und anderer personenbezogener Daten kennen

- Mit den Wegen und Strukturen für beschränkten Datenzugang vertraut sein, sowie mit verteilten und föderierten Analysen

- Lokale Expertise und Ressourcen kennen
