Iron is crucially involved in multiple important biochemical pathways, and thus a sufficient supply of the metal is not only essential for mammalian host cells but also for most microbes which need the metal for their growth and pathogenicity. A tug of war for iron between the host and microbe, for which the term “nutritional immunity“ has been coined, is a central mechanism deciding on the fate of an infection. Importantly, iron controls multiple steps of host immune responses and thus the efficacy of anti-microbial host effector pathways.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMO), important pregnancy and lactation-specific factors, are known for their prebiotic, anti-infective and immunomodulating effects, among other things. Since the previous points of contact of HMO research were mainly neonatology, pediatrics and pediatric nutrition, this symposium is intended to bridge the gap to other disciplines such as feto-maternal medicine, perinatology and fetal programming, but also cardiovascular medicine, immunology and metabolic diseases. This should stimulate and continue the discussion of fundamentally new ideas and innovative collaborations.
Lectures by leading international experts cover topics on:
- HMO research in the context of breast milk and lactation
- HMO research in the new context of pregnancy and fetal imprinting

The goal of the workshop is to inform researchers on technical and legal aspects of working with sensitive data. The workshop will introduce them to tools that can be used for data anonymization, privacy-preserving processing, generation of synthetic data, etc. This will include demos of selected tools for privacy-preserving data mining/analysis. Furthermore, the participants will learn about the WellFort platform that integrates these tools and provides novel means for consent management.

Jakob Harden is a PhD student at the Institute of Materials Testing and Building Materials Technology and is developing a pilot project for a database-based, platform-independent laboratory data management system together with the Institute of Biomechanics as part of the RDM Marketplace at TU Graz.

Liebe Kolleg*innen!
WIR sind wieder da! Im Namen der Arbeitsgruppe Hepatologie der Österreichischen Gesellschaft für Gastroenterologie und Hepatologie dürfen wir Sie zum fünften Frühlingstreffen der Hepatologie wiederum sehr herzlich nach Graz einladen.
Unser eintägiges Symposium wird sich in gewohnt praxisrelevanter Form einer Standortbestimmung der Therapie der wichtigsten Lebererkrankungen widmen. Dabei wollen wir das gesamte therapeutische Spektrum für infektiös bedingte, vaskuläre, genetische und metabolische Lebererkrankungen bis hin zum Management der Komplikationen der Leberzirrhose und des hepatozellulären Karzinoms abdecken, um Ihnen innerhalb eines Tages einen modernen Werkzeugsatz der Therapie dieser Lebererkrankungen in praxisnaher Form zu bieten.
Neben dieser aktuellen Standortbestimmung wagen wir aber auch einen Blick auf die nahe diagnostische und therapeutische Zukunft, sodass es bis zur letzten Sitzung unter dem Titel „Cutting Edge Hepatology“ verspricht spannend zu bleiben!

Would you like to develop a sustainable and FAIR research infrastructure at your institution? Thomas Haselwanter will give you an insight into how a central hub (VIVO) can be used as a link between legacy systems and future research infrastructure systems.
In the talk he will go into these processes and share his learnings:
- Creating a Research Graph Meta Model for the University of Innsbruck
- Defining international standards for the data model (OpenAIRE, CERIF)
- Implementation of VIVO as a central hub
- Enrichment of metadata and persistent identifiers (for example ORCID, DOIs)

Thomas Haselwanter, Universität Innsbruck – Thomas Haselwanter (ORCID: 0000-0001-9160-0180) led the project e-infrastructures Austria Plus from 2017-2019 and manages the Web and Information Systems department at the Universität Innsbruck. He also supervises the development of RDM infrastructures at the Universität Innsbruck.

Compared to plate readers information on individual cells can be generated. The huge amount of data, which is generated, needs proper data management and statistic analysis for correct interpretation of data.
Theory: principle of common cell-based assays (cytotoxicity, apoptosis, oxidative stress, proliferation, organelle function) and of HCS, statistical methods.
Practical part: plate layout, seeding, treatment of plates for photometric and HCS analysis, MTS and cell staining, HCS data acquisition, statistical analysis of data.
