Absolute Symmetrie ist in der Natur nicht oder nur sehr selten zu finden und die „optische Symmetrie“ nicht immer zufriedenstellend. Folglich können Mammaasymmetrien eine Belastung für Betroffene sein, die neben psychischen auch physische Probleme begründen können. Aus diesem Grund können operative Eingriffe zur Angleichung angestrebt werden. Objektive Daten zur perioperativen Mammasymmetrie sind in der wissenschaftlichen Literatur rar; Zufriedenheit wird oftmals durch subjektive Parameter quantifiziert.
