It can\r\nbe assessed by the Patient Activation Measure® (PAM). The main objective of the thesis is to\r\ninvestigate the psychometric properties of the German PAM® survey in patients with chronic diseases.\r\nMethods\r\nOutpatients with macular edema participated in this questionnaire-based cross-sectional study. Through\r\ninterviews, patient activation, self-rated health, self-efficacy, quality of life, general mood and health information\r\nseeking were assessed. Psychometric properties were investigated using item response theory\r\n(IRT), Cronbach's α and trait-trait correlations.\r\nResults\r\n554 patients were included in the final analysis. The median age was 69 (IQR: 62.0  76.0) years. The\r\nstudy sample showed a mean overall activation score of 74.1 (SD: 13.7). All items showed ceiling eects.\r\nEmpirical reliability from the IRT model and Cronbach's α were 0.75. The PAM® survey showed a\r\nSpearman correlation of 0.54 (p<.001) with self-efficacy, 0.51 (p<.001) with quality of life, 0.34 (p<.001)\r\nwith general mood and 0.27 (p<.001) with health information seeking.\r\nDiscussion\r\nThe PAM® survey reliably assesses patient activation in an everyday clinical setting, and it is also a\r\nvalid measurement tool. Objective assessment in an interview setting with the PAM® survey is possible.\r\nPatients with low patient activation are identied with the questionnaire. Measurement quality deteriorates\r\nfor those with high activation ability level, as items oer little information to distinguish between\r\nthem.
