Zudem führt die alternde Bevölkerung der Industrienationen zu einer steigenden Nachfrage nach medizinischer Versorgung, was die Kernaufgabe dieser Einrichtungen darstellt. Um eine funktionierende Gesundheitsversorgung auch für künftige Generationen zu gewährleisten, sollten Krankenhäuser Prinzipien der nachhaltigen Entwicklung sowie der Gesundheitsförderung fest in ihre Unternehmenskultur integrieren. Dies stellt neben der Erbringung medizinischer Kernleistungen jedoch eine erhebliche Herausforderung dar.
