Über 80 HSP-Genorte wurden bisher identifiziert. Die Diagnose basiert auf neurologischen und genetischen Untersuchungen. Die Therapie ist symptomatisch, jedoch sind spezifische Therapien Gegenstand aktueller Forschungen. Eine Übersicht über die pathogenen Mechanismen der HSPs wird im ersten Teil der Literaturrecherche (Kapitel 3) dargelegt. Im zweiten Teil wird die vorhandene wissenschaftliche Literatur zur REEP2-assoziierten HSP dargestellt.
