S1P is produced and stored in platelets and can be released upon platelet activation. S1P is recognized by five different receptors (S1PR1-5), which are transmembrane G-protein coupled receptors that can further affect many downstream pathways.\r\nThe activation of platelets and the release of certain molecules by this process can influence trophoblast behaviour and have been implicated to be connected to serious pregnancy complications.\r\nIn this thesis it could be shown via qPCR that all five S1P receptors are expressed in the trophoblast cell line BeWo, with S1PR2 being the most abundant showing a ten-fold higher expression compared to the others. It was found that all of the 5 receptors were also present in human first trimester placentas. Thereupon, it was investigated if these receptors are still expressed in term placentas. It was found that healthy term placentas as well as pre-term and pathological placentas from pregnancies complicated with preeclampsia express all S1P-receptors with high abundancy except for S1PR2.
